Chapter 14
Lord Joshua St. Vincent sat his rooms in a small apartment in Calcutta. He had been waiting in the port since the departure of Mr Henry Cartwright for China.
Lady de Mandeville had issued him no further instructions since he had been ordered to act as an escort. She had sent for Callum St. Vincent but seemingly had no use for the older brother.
This had proven to be quite fortuitous for the young lord. He had other matters that he wanted to attend to that he didnât want Lady de Mandeville interfering in, at least not yet.
He had been waiting for two days when something he had been longing for was delivered to him. It was a small box that was made from mahogany and polished so that it shone as the young lord unfolded the soft white cloth from around the box.
To the untrained eye, it looked like something akin to a jewellery box, but it was much heavier to lift.
The lock on the box was small and intricate, but it took Joshua mere moments to open it using the picklock he had acquired on his last visit to London.
The lock gave way and the lid to the box popped open. He carefully opened the lid and saw that the box was lined with felt and filled with papers.
He carefully took out the first of the papers; it was dated just a few months ago and dealt with the opium situation in Canton. The paper contained the names of all those that dealt in the trade both for the British and for the Chinese.
Next, there were papers that listed who each of the poppy fields in each province belong to, the names of the farmers and those that had been coerced into growing the drug instead of growing anything else.
The more he read, the more Lord St. Vincent understood how imperative the opium markets in China were to Lady de Mandevilleâs plans and to the fortunes of the Company and the British Empire.
Contained in this box was all the information that was needed for an ambitious man to not only topple the legend of John Smith, but also to unravel the power of the Company and the British Empire.
Each piece of paper was older than the last, and each one contained more secrets that brought a devilish smile to the lips of the young lord.
The papers went back decades, and when he had finished reading them, he knew exactly what he was going to do.
He placed all of the papers neatly back in the box and sat in his chair, contemplating his future. In the box beside him was the power to inspire uprising in India and end all British trade in the East if Lady de Mandeville didn't bow to his wishes. Lord St. Vincent found the idea so delightful he couldn't help but smile to himself before he made plans to travel to the de Mandeville Estate.
